Competence Center: Project Management

Our clients value not only our software engineering and data science skills, but also our qualifications in leading and executing challenging IT projects. We want to continuously develop these project management qualities and promote them among our employees.

For this purpose, the most experienced project managers across all departments at HMS come together in the project management board. We maintain a representative overview of the HMS customer portfolio and the various projects in coordination with each other. We understand the multifaceted requirements for successful project management, which our project managers encounter and offer advice on.

If you have experience in software development or in the field of data science; if you have an affinity for the organizational, coordinative and, not least, communicative challenges of project management; and you are also not afraid to take on responsibility, then you could experience versatile and exciting challenges with a great deal of creative freedom.

Strategic Knowledge Goals

For Customers

We want to advise and support not only from a technological point of view, but also from a project management perspective. We help our customers, for example, by moderating the requirements engineering process with all stakeholders, coordinating the launch phase or keeping an eye on the daily work progress during implementation as a Scrum master.

For Project Staff

Nobody likes long-winded meetings without a clearly formulated goal. This includes a common understanding regarding responsibilities and priorities. Good project management should critically reflect on these issues, with the goal of creating the best possible framework conditions for constructive and efficient work collaboration.

For Project Managers

Our goal is to promote continuous development and self-critical reflection. Therefore, we create spaces for the exchange of experiences in order to:

  • Discuss project management paradigms and trends: There is no one-size-fits-all approach! For which kind of projects is an agile approach useful, and for which not?
  • Establish best practices and checklists: What should be considered based on practical experience when setting up a Scrum process?

Benjamin Keller
Senior Software Engineer

What do you like most about working on the project management board? What topics are you most interested in?
David: The exchange with other experienced project managers helps me develop my own abilities and presents new ways of solving problems for me. I get ideas for solving complex situations, but also tools for my daily work. In addition to this personal component, I also enjoy continuing to further popularize project management at HMS and sharing best practices that help young project managers gain a foothold.

What does your participation on the project management board look like? What exact topic are you working on?
Andreas: We regularly exchange ideas on the standards and challenges of project management at HMS at the PM Board. Currently, I am revising our training curriculum for new project managers together with two other experienced colleagues. Our goal here is to help colleagues get started in project management through structured training. We aim to efficiently provide them with both standard expertise and HMS specifics so that they can optimally perform their new role.

How does working on project management board topics benefit you personally, and what value does it add to others?
Benjamin: As part of our work on the PM Board, we compiled an Agile Guide, which bundles our experience in agile Project Management and provides a structured platform for discussion. While creating this guide, I had to reflect extensively on my experience and relate it to the knowledge of colleagues, which in turn allowed me to refine my own knowledge and learn some tips from members of the competence center. Working in the competence center motivates me personally and shows me where I can still improve. Based on our written down experiences, younger colleagues can now benefit and overcome certain hurdles more easily.

Examples for Knowledge Circles

An informal and productive exchange of experiences among HMS project managers provides space for discussion, especially with regard to best practices in everyday project management.

Through a structured training program for new project managers, the quality and professionalism level of project management at HMS is sustainably secured and improved.

The HMS experts for Scrum and agile methods were provided with a platform for exchange. Best practices and practical guidelines for Scrum projects were compiled and presented to all project managers.
