A leading global insurance group is modernizing its central BI application landscape to ensure its future viability and cost-effectiveness. The IT strategy provides for the replacement of SAS technology.

Initial situation

• Company-wide modernisation: Successive replacement of the on-premise SAS 9.4 application landscape.
• Initial project: Modernisation of a central accounting application.
• Choice of partner: HMS was selected as a partner to identify options, check their feasibility and play a key role in implementation.

HMS solution

An assessment and design phase began in close coordination, which served as the basis for the concept and target architecture of HMS. The new target architecture comprised:

• Use of company-wide cloud platform based on AWS
• Angular for the web front end
• Python integration for former SAS users
• BaFin requirements

To begin with, the semi-automatic migration of the customer-specific SAS code to Python was analysed to prove its feasibility. With this approach, customer IT and HMS also took part in a group-wide GenAI competition together and won first place.

The migration then began in order to reduce the SAS footprint and demonstrate group-wide transferability. The modernisation was implemented within the defined framework. All functional and technical requirements were met.
