SAS has been established in many companies for decades thanks to its technical strength and wide range of applications. It is used centrally in data warehousing, ETL processes or specialised analytics applications.
However, manufacturer support for the previous SAS OnPrem versions is limited in time. Companies are therefore required to consider the possible migration paths promptly in order to achieve their goals in good time.
Companies can decide in favour of two basic migration directions. On the one hand, for a migration to a target platform that continues to rely on SAS technology, or for a replacement of SAS and a switch to an equivalent target environment with cloud resources.
With the introduction of the new SAS Viya technology, organisations have the opportunity to combine the benefits of SAS with those of cloud providers. These benefits are numerous, but there are also significant implications for existing systems, interfaces, validation requirements, internal competences and support issues.
For customers who prefer an intermediate step, we recommend evaluating the use of SAS Analytics Pro or SAS Viya Workbench in the cloud. In doing so, they can continue to use tried-and-tested solutions and at the same time secure manufacturer support for years to come.
The minimum option of using SAS 9.5 is not a long-term solution and should therefore be weighed up carefully.
For companies that want to use the necessary migration steps for a reorganisation, exit paths towards a cloud solution without SAS technology are available. They can chose between a wide range of options such as switching to an alternative SaaS analytics solution, setting up a cloud analytics platform with the integrated on-board tools of the respective cloud provider or switching completely to open source. This also allows them to simplify their IT system landscape during migration and adapt it to their IT and cloud strategy. The high effort involved in migrating SAS source code to a new language such as Python can be easily managed with the help of HMS's own code migration tool. Our tool relies on generative AI to automate the transformation process.
