FAQs – Answers to Your Questions
The translation tool is a Python implementation and is operated by HMS consultants as an expert tool in the migration project. It is usually installed on development environments at our customers (Python runtime required) and executed there.
No, it is not a "program sent in the prompt to a GenAI model and it generates a direct translation" approach. Since code migration involves aspects beyond the actual translation, such as defining the code structure in the new language, selecting libraries and frameworks, integrating custom code, or possibly switching to other process structures, this program approach is not optimal for migrating large codebases.
We model the migration process as a complete migration of a codebase in various steps. This allows us, for example, to make adjustments to these files even during an ongoing code translation (e.g., 50% of the programs have already been migrated)—such as if a code structure or library needs to be replaced or additional comments need to be inserted.
GenAI is used in many sub-steps, especially where there is high complexity in individual code sections within the codebase. However, for cost-efficiency reasons, simple "IF" constructs are not translated via GenAI.
No, we individually address our customers' existing system landscapes and carry out a migration according to their requirements. We are happy to advise our customers on what we consider to be obvious and efficient migration paths and bring best practices, standards, and templates, if available.
