AI coding agents are changing the way software is developed. They plan tasks, write and modify code, run tests, and respond to feedback. In practice, however, one thing quickly becomes clear: a powerful model alone does not make a reliable agent. To work safely, transparently, and consistently, an agent needs the right environment. This environment is known as a harness. The discipline of designing, operating, and continuously improving it is called Harness Engineering.
