From SAS to R/Python: Practical Insights into Automated Code Translation

Large scale code migrations from one language / platform such as SAS to another (e.g., R or Python) are lengthy and cost intensive efforts, especially in strictly regulated environments. This talk introduces a structured approach to handle such migrations in a cost and time efficient manner with automation utilities build upon Generative AI and sophisticated code templating.

Robert explains how deterministic outputs can be achieved — which is not possible with most AI solutions — and discuss experience and potential of automated code translation based on our practical insights from multiple migration projects where he successfully executed the approach on large legacy code bases with up to 500k+ lines of SAS code — primarily in the insurance and finance sector, but the core concepts are universally applicable.
