Actually, there is no such thing as a "typical working day" - every day brings new tasks and new challenges. However, typical activities include discussions and coordination with customers in a project context, a lot of programming of course, but also research, mathematical-analytical topics or project management.
The variety of topics you are confronted with. From the ethics of clean code to current research work on machine learning methods, it's all there.
Very uncomplicated communication, extremely flat hierarchies, a broad spectrum of expertise - and sometimes time to talk about "God and the world" for a few minutes.
If you are looking for a challenging job with a high degree of flexibility - apply to HMS!
Many colleagues have a similar educational background to mine, which often makes communication easier. Short communication channels and the dynamic project environment do the rest.
My projects mostly involve the operationalization of machine learning algorithms - in other words, making the results of such algorithms available to users while also paying attention to stability, security and performance.
In one project, we had to create a complete cloud architecture from scratch as a team that bundles data flows, transformations and analyses - a major challenge, not least due to the large number of requirements that had to be met simultaneously.
You need good self-organization and the ability to switch back and forth quickly between different topics.
An open company culture, flat hierarchies and always an open ear to solve any problems quickly and easily. In addition, great flexibility to combine private and working life. Plus: fruit and coffee.
I am married and blessed with 4 children.
Flexible working hours and a general understanding of the fact that things sometimes don't work out the way you originally planned when you have children - whether it's because one of them is ill or just because their shoelaces don't want to do it...
Yes, definitely - the working hours are largely flexible (apart from a relatively short core working time) and HMS offers a lot to support parents in particular: children's sick days, parents' cafés, support with daycare costs, ...
The flexible working hours make it easy to fit in private appointments. It is also important that HMS clearly states that vacation usually comes before project work, so that you can plan very freely according to your private ideas. Even short-term vacation was never a problem. Unfortunately, many activities with colleagues have fallen asleep due to the coronavirus pandemic, but there were always interesting offers (indoor soccer, board game rounds, Japanese, ...).
Providing concrete support in this situation is generally difficult. We were lucky enough to always have enough capacity for our little ones, so we didn't need any support. The increase in children's sick days has certainly been helpful. However, in a more difficult situation, it would probably have amounted to a reduction in total working hours to 80%, for example, which would have been possible at relatively short notice with HMS.
Currently - nothing. 😊
